Where do earthquakes occur in Italy?

Italy is situated at the convergent boundary between two major tectonic plates: the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate.
The relative movement between these two plates leads to the accumulation of energy and deformation that is occasionally released in the form of earthquakes of different magnitudes.
Most earthquakes occur at depths between 0 and 40 km (Fig. A) and are concentrated in areas along the Apennines, the Calabrian arc, and the Alps.
However, Italy is also affected by some intermediate and deep earthquakes (up to 600 km) in certain areas.
This seismicity occurs where the lithosphere of the Ionian Sea subducts beneath the Calabrian arc and the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Fig. B).
